दशरथ मांझी का जन्म 1934 में मुसाहर परिवार में हुआ था दशरथ मांझी माउंटेन मैन के नाम से भी जाने जाते हैं ये दुनिया कि नजरो में अपने एक अद्भुत काम से आये जो 110 मीटर लम्बा और 9.1 मीटर चौड़ा 7.6 मीटर गहरी चट्टान में सिर्फ छेनी और हथोड़े कि सहायता से एक रास्ते का निर्माण करना था अपनी २२ साल की कठोर मेहनत से इन्होने अत्री और वजीरगंज के बीच 55 किलोमीटर का रास्ता सिर्फ 15 किलोमीटर तक छोटा कर दिया था (चट्टान को तोड़कर रास्ते का निर्माण करके)|

दशरथ मांझी गहलौर गाँव में एक मजदूर के रूप में काम करते थे वे युवावस्था में ही अपना घर त्याग कर धनबद गाँव में एक कोयले की खदान में काम करने लगे थे बाद में वे अपने गाँव गहलौर में वापस लौटे और फागुनी (फाल्गुनी देवी ) से शादी करी|

अपने गाँव गहलौर में लौटने के बाद वे खेतीहर मजदूर बन गए| कहा जाता है कि प्रत्येक दिन की तरह फाल्गुनी , दशरथ मांझी के लिए पानी और खाना देने दोपहर में जा रही थी लेकिन पहाड़ी रास्ता होने के कारण उनका पाँव फिसला और उन्हें काफी चोट लग गई लेकिन डॉक्टर 55 किलोमीटर दूर होने के कारण और 55 किलोमीटर का रास्ता पथरीला होने के कारण उन्हें सही समय पर उपचार नहीं मिल सका और फाल्गुनी कि मृत्यु हो गई|

इस घटना से प्रभावित होकर उन्होंने अपने गाँव का रास्ता आसन बनाने का प्रण लिया और चट्टना को काटकर रास्ता बनाने कि सोची जिससे कि गाँव वासियों को स्वस्थ्य सुविधाए और अन्य साधन आसानी से प्राप्त हो सकें|
उन्होंने चट्टान को केवल छेनी और हथोड़े से काटकर110 मीटर लम्बा 7.7 मीटर गहरा और 9.1 मीटर चौड़ी सड़क का निर्माण कर लिया | उनका कहना था कि जब उन्होंने चट्टान को तोड़ने का काम किया तो कई लोगों ने शुरुवात में उन्हें पागल कहा लेकिन इससे उनका बल कमजोर नहीं हुआ|

रास्ते का निर्माण का कार्य 22 वर्ष में पूर्ण हुआ लेकिन इस रास्ते ने अत्री और वजीरगंज का 55 किलोमीटर का रास्ता 15 किलोमीटर तक सिमटा दिया| मांझी के इस कार्य ने गाँव के लोगों का जीबन आसान कर दिया | मांझी का कहना था कि शुरुवात में लोगों ने उनके इस कार्य की उपेक्षा की लेकिन बाद में वही लोगों ने उनका हौसला बढ़ाने में सहायता की पर उनके लिए भोजन और औजारों की भी व्यवस्था कराई|

दशरथ मांझी को पित्ताशय का केंसर होने के कारण उन्हें 23 जुलाई 2007 को नई दिल्ली के AIIMS हॉस्पिटल में एडमिट कराया गया लेकिन केंसर का इलाज न होने के कारण 27 अगस्त 2007 में उनका देहवसान हो गया| उन्हें बिहार सरकार द्वारा राजकीय अंतिम संस्कार प्रदान किया गया था|
वे अपने कार्य से देश में माउंटेन मेन के नाम से प्रचलित हो गए थे और बिहार सरकार द्वारा उनका नाम पद्मा श्री सम्मान के लिए २००६ में समाज सेवा के क्षेत्र में दिया गया |

भारतीय डाक द्वारा दशरथ मांझी की एक स्टाम्प 26 दिसम्बर में बनायी गई थी|

अगस्त २०१५ में मांझी द माउंटेन मैन के नाम की एक बॉलीवुड फिल्म बनायी गई थी जो केतन मेहता द्वारा डायरेक्ट कि गई थी और इस फिल्म में नवाज़ुदीन सिद्दीकी ने दशरथ मांझी और राधिका आप्टे ने फाल्गुनी देवी की अहम भूमिका भली भाँती रूप से निभाई थी|
